How the daily rate is built

Effective basic = Basic pay + pay element (30% for running staff)
Monthly emolument = Effective basic × (1 + DA%)
Daily rate = Monthly emolument ÷ 30
Encashment = Daily rate × Days
Worked example. Running staff, basic pay ₹35,400, DA 60%, 30 days.
Pay element = ₹10,620  →  effective basic = ₹46,020
Monthly emolument = ₹73,632  →  daily rate = ₹2,454
Encashment for 30 days = ₹73,632

The 300-day limit

At retirement, encashment is capped at 300 days of accumulated leave. That is why the slider above stops there. Encashment taken while in service — for example alongside LTC — runs under separate limits and reduces the balance you can carry to retirement.

The month is always 30 days here. The daily rate divides by 30 whatever the calendar month, so the rate does not change between February and March.

Common questions

How is leave encashment calculated?

Take basic pay, add the 30% pay element if you are running staff, then add DA on that whole figure. That gives the monthly emolument. Divide by 30 to get a daily rate, and multiply by the number of days being encashed.

What is the formula for leave encashment?

Encashment equals ((Basic pay plus pay element) plus DA on that) divided by 30, multiplied by the number of days. The pay element is 30% of basic pay for running staff and nil for stationary staff.

Why divide by 30 and not by the days in the month?

The rules use a flat 30-day month for the daily rate, regardless of whether the month has 28, 30 or 31 days. That keeps the daily rate the same all year.

How many days can be encashed at retirement?

Leave encashment at retirement is limited to 300 days of accumulated leave. Encashment while in service, such as alongside LTC, has its own separate limits and conditions.

Do running staff get more leave encashment?

Yes. The 30% pay element is added to basic pay before DA is applied, so on the same basic pay a running staff member gets a noticeably higher daily rate than stationary staff.

Is leave encashment taxable?

Leave encashment at retirement is exempt for government employees. Encashment received while still in service is taxable as salary. Check the current rules for your situation.
